I am really interested to know if the Italians were in India as I am trying to trace the origins of my surname, 'Bassi'. My searches lead be a a village named Bassi, a Bassi fort, a Bassi railway station and a Bassi Palace. Anyone knowing details, pls send me some information at my email address poonambassi@hotmail.com.

I didn't make that conclusion; the author of the article did. But he is hardly the first to do so. A.M. Mundadan lays out the argument beginning on page 15 of volume 1 of his History of Christianity in India, which is an excellent critical study of the evidence.

Several weeks ago I saw a special on PBS concerning Archaelogical digs in central America. The people who live near these sites, many of which are very remote, are intolerant of "tomb robbers" and "treasure hunters." They have a keen interest in protecting these sites from such people because tourism and working for archaelogical expeditions is a good source of income for them. it is unfortunate that the same situation does not exist in Pattanam.
