There are all kinds of contemporary pressures for subtle betrayals, proving we're one of the fellow-travelers of the world-system, the use of certain code words, the cock of an eyebrow at the apropos moment. More straightforward demands are probably headed for us in the future. Well-put, that the recipients of that ancient bureaucratic ticket "added some limited number of days to the[ir] lives."
