How fortunate we are to have a Holy Father who shares the history of the early church with us! I have learned so much from Pope Benedict. He like John Paul has taught us why we are Catholics.

Mike, thanks again, for sharing so much with us pilgrims in Rome with you and the Holy Father last May. What I love the most about the early fathers is that they are friends who live today. I went on that pilgrimage after having my foot in a cast for two months last winter. The one day I was limping on that trip was when we had Mass at St. Clement's. St. Clement and St. Ignatius of Antioch are my friends and no doubt prayed for me at Mass. The foot never hurt during the next 7 days of the pilgrimage no matter how much walking we did.

Thanks again for all of your insight, and I surely look forward to another pilgrimage with the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology.

Thanks for posting this!

At first I thought that the Holy Father was downplaying St. Basil's role as a theologian.

But then I realized that he is locating the teaching role of "opposing heretics" within the bishop's ministry as a whole. Yes, that is the truth of a bishop's role.

Very effective!
