Cardinal Jose Saraiva Martins, Prefect of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Cause of Saints, has announced that the beatification of the great British patristics scholar John Henry Newman is “imminent.” (Hat tip: Gashwin Gomes.)

Interesting news! As a Protestant, I’m a bit confused on what standards are used to determine “beatification.” Isn’t there some requirement regarding miracles?
I ask this out of ignorance, not as a trick question :-)
Comment by Gregory Soderberg 01.09.08 @ 2:47 pmThe 1983 Code requires one proven miracle attributed to the intercession of the candidate (this requirement is waived in the case of a martyr). In addition, the candidate’s life and writings are thoroughly scrutinized, testimonies collected, etc. There’s a good article here:
