Today’s the emperor Gratian’s birthday. He was a key player in the removal of the pagan Altar of Victory from Christian Rome. The eventual victory belonged to St. Ambrose. The story’s told here.

While we’re at it, let’s thank the glorious Taliban for destroying those idolatrous Buddhist statues from Afghanistan!
I’m sorry, this is nothing to be proud of. Another chapter in the Church’s long suppression, persecution, and execution of pagans who were doing nothing more than practicing the religion of their fathers. It’s not cool when Muslims do it, nor so when it’s Catholic Emperors.
