Remember the Basque “discoveries” from a couple years ago? It seems they were fraudulent. Here’s word from the Guardian.

Well, the Crucifixion scene did have “R.I.P.” on it, they say. That should’ve raised more eyebrows than it did.

Confession time: you know, Kevin, that RIP was so odd that I thought it a mark of authenticity. It’s something that appears on ancient Latin grave markers. It’s just the sort of thing, misunderstood, that would end up in such a crude, primitive scratching. This is how we acquire the habit of raising our eyebrows.
