It's set slightly earlier, but there is "Callista", one of two novels written by Venerable John Henry Cardinal Newman, C.O. One of the major characters is St. Cyprian. It's not a military type book, though. I'm not sure what current category it would fit in- maybe romance, only the 'happily ever after' is martyrdom rather than marriage.....It's also got a scary description of the devastation inflicted by a locust swarm, not to mention angry anti-Christian mobs and a character who becomes demon-possessed.
The Venerable was, of course, writing in the 19th century, so the syntax tends to be more complex than modern readers expect, but it is exciting. (I wonder why it was never made into a cast of thousands epic a la "Ben-Hur" ....)

I read military fiction, but I haven't come across this guy. (Of course, there's a huge amount of fiction being written these days.)

The really sad thing is that one of my old favorite authors came out with a new book in hardback in September, and I didn't hear anything about it or indeed see it at the bookstore. (She also apparently forgot to add it to her webpage because she's so focused on her Livejournal. Oops....)
