Work to Be Done

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has posted (in PDF) the general results of the Vatican’s Apostolic Visitation of U.S. seminaries. Diocesan seminaries fare very well. Here’s a sad line, though: “nearly all Visitation reports noted lacunae in the programs. Mariology and Patristics were frequently mentioned as being among these laucnae.” [Emphasis added.] If you don’t have the patience for long reports in light print, there’s a good summary here.

In my diocese, the sems have a good man teaching patristics, my sometime co-author Father Kris Stubna.

Obviously, these seminaries need to start subscribing to my podcasts of the Fathers! You can’t get any cheaper than free, folks….

It also goes to show that it’s a wise seminarian who knows his Fathers — and our Blessed Mother. :)

It’s a shame the report was published in generalities. Better to not publish than make broad statements, especially about the formation program of religious orders. Some are awful and some are quite good. The report paints them with the same brush. A shame

Fortunately, Patristics is alive and well at Holy Apostles, and happily, I’m taking the class after a two-year wait.
