I've been fascinated for over twenty years with the connection between early Egyptian monasticism and early Celtic Christian monasticism. There are small references here and there, but nothing major that I've found. An interesting little booklet is "The Egyptian Desert in the Irish Bogs: The Byzantine Character of Early Celtic Monasticism" by Gregory Telepneff. If anyone knows of a major source on the subject, I'd appreciate the lead.
