I guess it's not uncommon to say "Augustine of Hippo" or "Athanasius of Alexandria" or even "Origen of Alexandria." But you're right: this one's just not done. He is sui generis. And it's not like "Stridon" is going to clarify matters for 99.44% of the populace! Jerome didn't bother putting it on the map. He high-tailed it out of there! I had the same thought.
