This is an important topic. In the Roman world, girls, handicapped babies, etc. were routinely left out to die. The ending of this practice, and the establishment of legal and moral protections for children, is a major accomplishment of the early Church. It is no concidence that the decline of Christianity in the west has been accompanied by an erosion of those protections.
