Through the Prayers of the Holy Fathers …

A dear reader of A Year with the Church Fathers writes to let me know he completed his 365 days with the book and was beginning again. He sent along a beautiful prayer from the Divine Liturgy of St.John Chrysostom. He offered it for me, and I offer it for you: “through the prayers of our holy Fathers, O Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us and save us.”

  1. This is really “The Patristic Prayer” or blessing. It is very common at the end of Eastern Orthodox prayers and services, thus it should be common in the byzantine rites too. It refers not only to “Writing Fathers” but also to all the countless bishops and spiritual fathers that have guided the Church up to now by their word and example (perhaps witout eriting anything att all!) and in this moment are carrying it in, and by, their prayers. Isn´t that an awesome perspective?!
